We believe fostering environmental consciousness among our youths is crucial for building a sustainable future. Our recent inter-school debate competition, organised in partnership with the Rotary Club of Abuja Metro, brought the pressing issues of land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience to the forefront of young minds. The collaboration debate engaged the students from 10 secondary schools in Abuja in spirited discussions on the World Environment Day 2024 Debate Competition
World Environment Day is celebrated every year. The theme for 2024 is Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.” The theme also addresses the impact of climate change in Nigeria. Our debate competition aimed to engage students in a thought-provoking discussion about this crucial environmental issue in Nigeria and solutions to tackle the environmental challenges. This was an opportunity for the students to develop their critical thinking skills, public speaking skills, gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues in Nigeria, and network with students from other schools.
The debates centred on two key topics: the impact of tree planting on land restoration and desertification, and the challenges of effective waste management in Nigeria. The topics were carefully chosen to reflect both global environmental concerns and local realities. The debate was intentionally designed to go beyond mere information transfer. These abilities are essential not only for understanding complex environmental issues but also for developing the next generation of well-rounded, engaged citizens.
The C-Circle Research founder, Dr. Chimere May Ohajinwa, emphasises that these debates do more than just broaden knowledge about climate change. They open minds, encourage respectful dialogue, and help students engage with complex societal issues in a structured and constructive way.
At C-Circle, we recognize the intricate connection between environmental health and public wellbeing. This event exemplifies our commitment to raising awareness about this crucial nexus. By engaging youth in these discussions, we’re laying the groundwork for a society that’s more environmentally conscious and, consequently, healthier.
We’re dedicated to evolving our approach as environmental challenges shift, always striving to illuminate the complex interplay between our environment and our health. Through initiatives such as this, we aim to nurture a generation that’s aware of environmental issues and equipped to address them effectively.
